  • A must-play list of about 11 songs (about 20% of the dancing) is plenty. Leave the rest to your DJ or band - they can read the dance floor.
  • A do-not-play list is usually 5-10 songs. Add genres too, and anything that brings back bad memories for the family.
  • Pick the key songs separately: grand entrance, first dance, parent dances, cake cutting, bouquet toss and the last dance.

How we calculate

  1. From the reception time we subtract cocktail hour and dinner (135 minutes in total), toasts (20 minutes) and the cake cutting with the bouquet toss (20 minutes). For a live band we also subtract about 15 minutes of break for every hour of playing.
  2. Dance time is multiplied by the pace: a DJ plays about 18 songs per hour (mixing shorter versions), a live band about 15. A dance set is 3-4 songs at a similar tempo.
  3. Background music during cocktail hour and dinner is counted at 3.5 minutes per song. The night follows a typical pattern: about 22% warm-up, 43% peak dancing, 23% after the cake and 12% for the last hour.

Questions and answers

How many songs does a DJ play at a wedding?

For a reception from 5 PM (cocktail hour) to 11 PM with toasts, a cake cutting and a bouquet toss, about 55 songs for dancing and about 40 in the background during cocktail hour and dinner.

Should we give the DJ a full playlist?

Better not. Give a must-play list of 10-15 songs and a do-not-play list, and leave the rest to the DJ - a good wedding DJ reads the dance floor instead of playing a list.
