How much does a wedding DJ or band cost?

Pick your entertainment and how long they play. Fewer hours bring the price down, extra hours are charged at the overtime rate, just like in a real contract. Add lighting and special effects on top.

What the price is made of

  • DJ5 hours included$1,800
  • Uplightingflat fee$400
  • In the US the DJ usually doubles as the MC: grand entrance, toasts, cake cutting, and the last dance. Ask whether announcements and a planning meeting are included.
  • Ask the venue before booking cold sparks or low fog - not every venue allows them because of smoke detectors and fire rules.

How we calculate

  1. The base price covers 5 hours of music - ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. Every hour beyond that is charged at the overtime rate: DJ about $250, band about $750, large band about $1,200.
  2. Fewer hours lower the price, but not proportionally, because travel, setup, and preparation cost the same: 3 hours is about 84% of the 5-hour price.
  3. In the US the DJ or bandleader is also your MC, so there is no separate host to add. Three or more effects from one company come with a 10% package discount.
  4. Location shifts music prices (major metros about +35%, small towns about -20%), and an off-season date or a Friday or Sunday is about 15% less.

Questions and answers

DJ or band?

A DJ costs roughly a third of a band and plays every song in the original. A band brings the energy of live music but has a narrower repertoire. A popular compromise is a band for the main sets with DJ sets during the breaks.

How many hours of music do we need?

A US reception usually runs 4-5 hours, and many couples want music for the ceremony and cocktail hour too, so most packages cover 5 hours with optional overtime.

Do we need a separate MC?

Usually not. Wedding DJs and bandleaders handle the announcements - grand entrance, toasts, cake cutting, last dance. Ask for a planning meeting so they know names and the timeline.
