How much money to give? Graduation, baptism, bar mitzvah, and more

Every occasion has its own customs: grandparents give the most for a graduation, a bar or bat mitzvah has its multiples of $18, and a housewarming needs no cash at all. Pick the occasion and your relationship to get an amount, a range, and how to make it up in bills.

Where the amount comes from

  • Typical giftaunt or uncle, graduation, from one person$75
  • A card with cash or a check is the classic graduation gift. For a college-bound grad, a contribution to a 529 plan or a gift card for dorm essentials works just as well.
  • Add a handwritten card - kids (and their parents) keep them for years.
  • What you can comfortably afford matters most. Gracious hosts don’t keep score.

How we calculate

  1. We start from a typical cash gift from one person for the occasion and your relationship (2026 amounts). Grandparents and godparents give the most, acquaintances the least.
  2. A couple gives one gift, about 60% bigger, not double. If you skip the party, the amount is about 20% lower.
  3. A big city raises amounts by about 15%, a rural area lowers them by about 10%. Your budget shifts the amount by -20% or +25%.
  4. If you also give a physical gift, the cash part is about 40% smaller. We round to amounts people actually give: $5 steps up to $100, $25 steps up to $300, then $50 steps; for a bar or bat mitzvah, multiples of $18.

Questions and answers

How much money do you give for a high school graduation?

Usually $25-50 from family friends and neighbors, $50-100 from aunts, uncles, and godparents, and $100-200 from grandparents. Friends of the graduate often give $20-25 or chip in together for one bigger gift.

Why do people give multiples of $18 for a bar or bat mitzvah?

In Hebrew, the letters of chai (“life”) add up to 18, so gifts of $36, $54, $72, $108, or $180 wish the teen a long life. It is a cherished custom, not a rule.

Does a couple give two gifts?

No. A couple gives one card, usually about 1.5-1.7 times what one person would give.

How much should I give if I can’t attend?

About 20% less than if you went to the party. Mail the card ahead of time or send the money with a personal note.
