- Collect into one account or a payment app like Venmo or PayPal, and set a deadline. The organizer shouldn’t end up paying out of pocket.
How we calculate
- We split the amount into shares. A person is one share, a couple two, one and a half, or one - whatever you agree on. People who don’t pay have no share, and theirs is spread over the rest.
- For a bill, we add the tip first (18-20% is standard at US restaurants), then split.
- We always round each share up to the step you pick, so nobody has to chip in extra later. The surplus is shown separately.
Cheat sheet: prices and good practice
Typical contributions
- Teacher gift from class parents: $10-25 per family
- Coworker gift: $10-20
- Group gift for friends: $25-50
- Bachelor or bachelorette weekend: $500-1,500
Questions and answers
Does the bride pay for her own bachelorette party?
Traditionally, no - the rest of the group splits her share. Put her under “People who don’t pay”.
How much should a couple pay?
Usually the same as two people, since two people are eating or traveling. For a gift, some groups count a couple as one and a half shares - pick that option.
Is the tip already on the bill?
Check before you split: many restaurants add an automatic gratuity of 18-20% for groups of 6-8 or more. If it is there, set the tip to 0% so you don’t tip twice.
