Do wedding gifts cover the cost?
A couple or a family with kids gives one gift, not several. So we count gifts per household, factor in registry gifts, and compare the total with the cost of your wedding. In the US gifts are a thank-you, not a way to fund the party - here is how much they realistically cover.

Gifts will cover about 33% of the cost
About $22,000 will come from you or your families. That’s normal - in the US most couples (and often their parents) pay for the bulk of the wedding.

Where the gifts come from
- Cash from couples and families41 × $250$5,100
- Cash from solo guests28 × $125$1,750
- Registry giftscounted at 60% of their price$4,150
- To break even, each gift would have to average about $480 (with 69 gifts).
- A safe assumption: gifts cover about a third of the cost. Treat anything above that as a nice surprise.
- Add a cash or honeymoon fund to your registry: guests who would rather give money can do it in a couple of clicks, and every dollar there counts as cash.
How we calculate
- Gifts come from households, not individual guests: a couple gives one gift, and so does a family with kids. So we turn your guest count into a number of gifts (couples + solo guests).
- Cash, checks, and money sent to a cash or honeymoon fund count in full. Many guests buy from your registry instead - for your budget we count a registry gift at about 60% of its price: it is useful, but it does not pay the caterer.
- The ±15% range shows how much the result depends on a few generous people (parents, grandparents, and siblings often give several times more than friends).

Questions and answers
Do wedding gifts pay for the wedding?
Rarely. With an average cost of about $33,000 and roughly 70 gifts, gifts typically cover 25-40% of the cost. A wedding is a party for your guests, not an investment - treat gifts as a welcome bonus, not part of the budget.
How many gifts will we get from 115 guests?
Usually 65-75: most guests come as couples or families.
Registry or cash fund?
Both work, and many couples do both. A cash or honeymoon fund on your registry lets guests who prefer to give money do it easily - here it counts as cash.
